Shelter in Place

Carol Zeches Hendrickson

Collage in turquoise, green, and yellow.

What more can I say that has not been said already? After two weeks of e-learning from home I now feel like this is the new normal; checking e-mails, Zoom conferencing, Google Classroom, phone calls, texts, and FaceTime. Connection has never been more important than now. I’ve downloaded new apps so I can stay current with everyone from colleagues to grandchildren.

What about the connection to self? I have also been gifted with more time to focus on my image making. It has been certainly meditative and playful since there are not as many time constraints. This one is a small (3″ X 6″) collage. I feel serene and peaceful yet energetic during a time of uncertainty.

“It is when we are confronted with . . . poignant reminders of mortality that we become most aware of the strangeness and wonder of our brief life on Earth.” by Kathleen Basford

The works I create are a reflection on my celebration of life. Each moment reminds me of the gift of a single breath. I use bright colors and spiral designs to express this joy. Some of my collages use doorways as a metaphor for new opportunities and hope. I work spontaneously and let the image I create lead me to the next step.
