Lock Down

Carol Zeches Hendrickson

We teachers know there will be lock-down practices and hope that we never have to experience a real one. A day in November was not so lucky for the staff at Rancho Tehama Elementary School in Tehama County, California. The lock-down was real and so was the threat to students' safety. I chose this story for the background of my image because I happened to be on a road trip through the area on the day it happened. The head school custodian distracted the shooter away from students to protect them. I feel grateful to be a part of a workforce that is known for its compassionate care of its constituents. Thank you Eric, for taking time to applaud the bravery of teachers and school staff.

The works I create are a reflection on my celebration of life. Each moment reminds me of the gift of a single breath. I use bright colors and spiral designs to express this joy. Some of my collages use doorways as a metaphor for new opportunities and hope. I work spontaneously and let the image I create lead me to the next step.
